Answer (Question
8) : There are many factors
which make a book stand out.
Originality is perhaps to me the
most important thing.
Book
design
has an important role initially (because this very much influences
the reader to pick up the book in the first place). (eg. cover
design, feel of the book, quality of paper and printing etc)
After
this though, it is really down to the reader's enjoyment of the story and illustrations,
and whether or not these two artforms seem to work successfully together to communicate something
unique.
GREAT books often show you
something new, and unique yet at the same time often feel uncannily
familiar to you as well.
Something
which effects you and that you can definately relate to or feel
engaged by. (This might be an emotion, an issue, the colours
of the book, or it may not even be recognisable to you as to
what it is).
But
I think it is the combination of something very new with something familiar which can make a book very lasting
and successful I think.
