On the William Street side of the church is a plaque to the memory of Fr John Hinteroecker S.J. who founded St Ignatius church. The following translation from the Latin has been provided by David Hester who is a former senior lecturer in Classics at Adelaide University. The title of our parish magazine was inspired by the first line of the memorial 'Christiane viator' or 'Christian traveller'.   Click on the photo thumbnail below if you want to see the memorial stone in all its glory.

Christian Traveller

The stone on which you stand covers the bones

of the Most Reverend John Hinteroecker S.J.

who came here from Austria

built this church

and laboured much.

He ended his life in Tasmania

in the middle of his labours

on the sixth day of October A.D 1872.

He has been resting here from 23rd July 1873.

Before you depart pray the Judge

to be merciful to him and to you

as you are hastening to the same end.
