Saints Peter and Paul ~ 29 June 2008Keys in our world are very important. Keys are used for locking up and unlocking, and for setting free I heard a football commentator say that certain team couldn't win because it lacked a key forward. Key word unlocks a mystery or puzzle. Jesus gives keys to the kingdom to Peter, built on his profession faith Church is not basically a social structure, but a community of people who share the faith of Peter and the apostles - “Apostle's creed.” The key that unlocks the kingdom is this faith, also seen in first letter. Peter is freed from gaol through faith and prayers of the community. The keys given to Peter are for reconciliation - binding and loosing. Only God can forgive, and at the centre of the Kingdom is God's power for forgiveness, compassion and reconciliation. This is more powerful than anything else, even the power of the underworld which is destructive, divisive and evil. |
