Some machines survive, but few manage to do it with such style as this beautifully preserved c1915 Peerless twin.
The machine is fitted with the unusual 5 hp Precision outside-flywheel twin. F.E. Baker in Birmingham built a range of interesting engines in the pre-war years, and this one was reputedly made solely for A.G. Healings for use in their Peerless motorcycles. It could be true, for while the 4 hp and 6 hp twins were relatively widely used, I've not seen the 5 hp in another make. Precision probably did well in the Australian market supplying makers like Healing, Lewis and Bullock with substantial numbers of motors.
The machine is headed back to the road, but there is an obvious problem to be solved first. Although the missing front wheel can be replaced without too much difficulty, sourcing a replacement Sturmey Archer Type JS hub gear is proving more problematic. If anyone can help with a complete hub or even parts, please email me and I will put you in touch with the owner. Copyright © Leon Mitchell
