Lewis specifications

Like my Bullock, this Lewis had passed through a number of owners before I acquired it in 1992. It had survived largely intact, but sadly without the original motor. The motor fitted is fairly close to the correct period, although the cylinder is slightly later. The only real difference is a slightly larger exhaust port.

The accessories on the bike - the rear carrier and the rear stand - are Millenium products, and are as specified in the catalogue of the period.

Engine: 3 hp water-cooled side valve (believed Stevens manufacture)
Lubrication: Hand pump at rear of tank, total loss
Ignition: Bosch magneto, chain driven
Carburettor: B&B fitted (possibly  Longeumare originally)
Transmission: Direct belt
Frame: Chater-Lea fittings with leaf spring front fork
Wheels: Cahter Lea hubs, 24" beaded edge tyres
Brakes: Single shoe acting on belt rim
Tanks: Combined petrol/oil. Separate radiator.
Builder: Lewis Cycle Works, 31 Gawler Place, Adelaide
Original Finish: Frame black enamel. Nickel plated wheels, tank, hadlebars and small parts. Off-white lines and writing on tank.
