AT NIGHT

LUMINESCING TOADSTOOLS

An incredible phenomenom.  It does not happen every year and only in certain places and at certain times.  Usually in June or July.  During the day look for very large yellow toadstools along tracks near the dam and along Alec's Gate track.   The toadstools are sometimes 15-20 cm across and 10 cm high.  Go back at night to spot the purple glows.  Once seen never forgotten!

CAMPFIRES

Available campfire areas are:

  • By the dam for large groups.
  • At Hackett Cookshed.
  • At KMR shed near BBQ area.
  • By the Pine Flat cookshed for small groups.
  • In front of the Amphitheatre, on Ken Maguire Reserve, for very large groups.
  • Forrest Reserve

ASTRONOMY

Unfortunately the Astronomical Society no longer meet at Douglas Scrub and have removed their permanent telescope. The oval area is an excellent area from which to view the night sky. You will need to bring your own telescope however.

NIGHT WALKS, SPIDER and POSSUM-EYE SPOTTING

  • Exploring the 'Nature Trail';
  • taking a short walk along Alec's Gate track or venturing through 'Pine Flat' are recommended night-walks.  Torches are usually necessary.   However, on a strong moonlit night, track walking is possible without torches.
  • Try spotting for spiders and possums while out walking.  Bring your torch up, level with your eyes, and look ahead along the light beam (pointing the torch at the ground about five metres in front of you), you will be amazed at what you see!
