FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GOLD JEWELLERY 
1. Gold jewellery is made out of gold alloyed with other metals - it is specified as a carat number. The carat number specifies the amount of gold in the alloy.     9 carat means 375 parts in 1000 is gold: 18 carat 750 parts in 1000 is gold.      It can also be marked as 375 or 750.    2.The higher the carat weight the heavier the item and the more gold there is in the item is for the same dimensions.     3. The higher the carat number the softer the gold alloy is and the quicker it will wear.    4.  The color and appearance of gold jewellery is the same irrespective of the carat number.     However it is possible to buy different colours of gold e.g. yellow (most common) ; rose gold a pink colour etc.   5. Gold is basically valued according to its weight, and design does not alter the value much. (see the price lists attached)

FIVE SECRETS OF HOW TO AVOID GETTING RIPPED OFF WHEN BUYING GOLD JEWELLERY 
1. Make sure that the jewellery is solid gold - i.e. you can buy hollow gold or jewellery chains which are made of hollow tubes which can be dented and are very difficult to repair.    If you do buy hollow gold in large chains as in bracelets, do so with your eyes open knowing the consequences and only wear them occasionally.        2. If you are tempted to buy second-hand jewellery consisting of chain (estate jewellery is the fancy name) look carefully at the LINKS WHERE THEY WORK (RUB ) TOGETHER for signs of wear which appears as indentations; check the wear on the catches and jump rings.       3. Look for or insist on being shown the carat marking.    Do not be fooled by markings such -as 18c gold plated -rolled gold- 925 gold plated (this means sterling silver gold plated and is OK if that is what you want).      4. Ask what is the weight in grams of the piece - do not be put off by the statement that the value goes by design etc.- if they don't know, ask them to weigh it.      There is no other way to make a real comparison between items that you see in different shops or adverts.    If they refuse, say you will go to a shop (better an internet site) where you can get the information. There are plenty of choices and competition these days. If they don't comply just march out.       5. When you see an advert that says "50% off" ask yourself -off what?   Chances are that it is 50% off the marked up price which may be 200% up on wholesale.
